This teleconference will make you more conversant in the language of legal citation and more agile in navigating the Bluebook. Communicating effectively in the legal field requires that citations to legal authority follow a uniform citation format. Readers of legal prose must be given the research coordinates to locate any authority that is used to support legal propositions.
Beyond the competency communicated by technically correct citations; effective use of citations can also be used as a persuasive communicative tool to direct a reader's attention to the salient portions of cited authorities and influence how the reader interprets the authority. The Bluebook; A Uniform System of Citation; published by the Harvard Law Review Association; provides the most widely used; though not exclusive; citation format used in the United States.
This teleconference will explore the ins and outs of the Bluebook's citation system; with a focus on understanding the purposes behind the citation rules as well as the mechanics of correct citation format. Although materials will be provided; we recommend that you bring a copy of the Bluebook for reference during the teleconference.
