Taxation of Gifts, Prizes, Bonuses and Awards

Taxation of Gifts, Prizes, Bonuses and Awards

Particularly in difficult economic times, employers are looking to provide benefits to employees with the least cost, both to them and employees. Gifts and prizes can be a good yet inexpensive way to boost morale, unless employers and employees alike fail to understand the tax consequences and end up with an unintended and unwanted tax bill. This teleconference will explain the tax consequences of gifts, prizes and other awards to employees, as well the tax issues associated with making payments to employees, such as employer provided travel, educational and moving expenses, and other programs such as tool allowances and leave-sharing programs. The focus will be not so much on the technical tax rules but the pitfalls of such activities and practical suggestions for maximizing their tax benefits.
